The Home Office has announced details of the student
tier of the new Points Based System for migrants to the UK. Individuals
wishing to study at a UK college or university will have to meet
strict new criteria, as will the educational institution that
they wish to attend.
The colleges and universities will need a license should they
wish to recruit foreign students, and will need to take responsibility
for their students, or they could face a ban from international
recruitment. For example, if a student fails to enrol, the institution
has a responsibility to alert the UK Border Agency (UKBA). Other
reasons for a license being revoked are failure to keep copies
of foreign students’ passports, failure to keep updated
copies of any contact details and failure to alert the UKBA if
a student stops their studies.
To be eligible to enrol, international students must also supply
their fingerprints and prove that they can support themselves
and their families during the stay. If the course lasts 12 months
or longer, a student is required to prove that they can pay their
fees and have in excess of £9,600 to cover their first
year in the UK. An extra £535 per month is required to
be proven for any dependants they wish to bring with them.
