Draft Code of Practice on Workplace Discipline and Grievances

Employers should be aware that the government have published a draft code of practice for consultation on the matters of discipline and grievances in the workplace.  The revised code aims to save money and time spent on the current disciplinary and grievance procedures by facilitating quicker and easier dispute resolution with the workplace.

The code has been amended to reflect the changes to workplace dispute resolution outlined in the Employment Bill 2007-2008, which overhauls existing statutory dispute resolution procedures.  The Bill received its first reading last year, and Royal assent is expected by the summer of 2008.

The new code seeks to avoid long-term dispute processes by implementing a short-term code of practice that can be followed by both employers and employees.  The consultation process will last until 25th July 2008.
