The government have encouraged businesses
to make a difference and get involved with community activities
across the country. Any small community groups with annual
income below £20,000 are eligible under the Grassroots
Grants scheme to receive grants of between £250 and £5,000.
Within the £130 million scheme, the government has set
aside £50 million, from which it plans to match any investments
from businesses. Whether sponsoring a sports team or donating
to a charity, the scheme means that donations from businesses
will be doubled. In fact, if the donations are to charitable
organisations, Gift Aid can be claimed, meaning that the donations
will be worth more.
The implication of this scheme, which is the first of its kind
in England, is that small local community organisations now have
access to grants without having to go through the onerous paperwork
associated with larger sums of money. Individual donors
or investors are welcome to join the scheme, as well as businesses.
