The government have recently released
a list of job roles under which people from outside the EU are
eligible to enter the country to fill skills shortages in England
and Scotland. This relates to Tier 2 of the new Points
Based System in place to regulate immigration of workers from
outside the EU.
The shortage occupation lists will be used to determine whether
individuals are eligible to enter the country. Employers
can bring in people from outside the European Economic Area (EEA)
to fill the skills gaps in the areas detailed on the list.
The list includes, but is not limited to; consultants and senior
nurses in particular healthcare specialisms, secondary school
teachers in the subjects of maths and science, skilled chefs,
skilled senior care workers and some animal care occupations,
including veterinary surgeons.
Under Tier 2, employers must be licensed sponsors, and provide
a certificate of sponsorship. As well as this, they must
have a good grasp of English, prospective earnings of more than £24,000
or a good qualification and enough money to support themselves
for the first month of their stay.
