Despite the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations
having been in effect for over 12 months, many small businesses are not
properly adhering to them. The regulations introduced new laws regarding
the disposal of unwanted electrical equipment on 1st July 2007.

Employees’ Right to Request Training Time
Workers may be given the right to request time off for training, if a
proposed regulation passes through parliament. The initiative to build
economic success through investment in skills could see workers receiving
more training as a result of the regulation, which would come into force
in 2010.

New Workplace Discrimination Laws
Employers may be required to publish their rates of pay in an attempt
to expose inconsistencies in the pay received by men and women, if a proposed
legislation is accepted. The government have announced plans for the Equalities
Bill, which aims to address a number of work-based discriminations.

Employers Banned From Encouraging Pensions Opt-Out
As part of the initiative to ensure today’s employees have enough
provision for retirement, the government has announced a proposed change
to its Pensions Bill. The change prohibits employers from encouraging employees
to opt out of workplace pension schemes by means of incentives. Employers
that simply force employees to opt out of the schemes will also be penalised.

Tips not Included in National Minimum Wage
An employer has lost a tribunal appeal to allow tips to be included as
part of the National Minimum Wage (NMW). An employment tribunal judge made
the decision in the case between Annabel’s restaurant and HMRC.
